Rated best value by shoppers:

These are the places shoppers most often mention for low, fair or good-value prices. Stock and prices change, so treat this as a good place to start rather than a price promise.

Compared but not placed

Two eligible Christchurch charity shops had too little review evidence to rank either way. They are not ruled out — there simply wasn’t enough to judge them on.

  • Hato Hone St John Op Shop Papanui
  • Salvation Army Family Store Aranui

How we chose the shops

Op Spot compared all 46 eligible Christchurch charity shops using ratings, review volume, recent review language and 93 checked local mentions. A shop needs at least one positive independent recommendation or editorial pick to enter the overall list; Google evidence then helps order the qualifiers. Bare names, location tips and shop-insider comments do not qualify, and no shop can pay for a place.

About Op Spot

What the list cannot tell you

This is a snapshot researched 21 August 2026, not a live price comparison. Google supplies at most five relevant review texts per shop, so the sample is comparable but not random. Older community evidence did not always preserve a source URL or date, so only recommendation wording that stands on its own was allowed to qualify a shop. Ratings are weighed against the national charity-shop average before they are compared. Vintage, consignment and other for-profit shops are outside this charity-only list.

Questions about the guide

Tap a question to see the answer.

Where should I start?

Start with Curate by City Mission if you want a central-city rummage, or use the map to choose three or four shops on the same side of town.

Where should I look for bargains?

St John Addington and St John Christchurch Central receive the most consistent mentions for good-value prices. Prices and stock change daily, so treat them as promising stops rather than guaranteed cheapest shops.

Does this include vintage and consignment stores?

No. This guide compares charity op shops only. You can find vintage, antique and consignment stores through Op Spot’s wider secondhand-shop filters.

Are the opening hours current?

Use each shop’s profile for its latest listed hours and address. The ranking itself is updated less often than those practical details.
