What a great pleasure meeting all the interesting folks in this well-stocked treasure house of books!!! It’s my first visit but I can’t wait to come back soon (even though I’m not from New Zealand). The owner is so knowledgeable and resourceful🤩🤩🤩!
Steadfast is a true gem in Christchurch, and I encourage anybody who is thinking about buying books or just on the fence about visiting to stop by and have a browse! I visited a while ago and I really want to go again soon. There's a staggering range of secondhand books in bookshelves grouped by whatever subject they're about (and there are a very wide variety of subjects in Steadfast!). They're sold for quite cheap, too! For example, the basically new comic hardback I bought (still in its plastic wrapping!) was a third of the price than it would be in regular bookstores/listed online. There's also a corner dedicated to DVDs and I think CDs as well, for any physical media enthusiasts out there. In addition to all these, there are also things like stickers, pins, tote bags, bookmarks, scrunchies and tiny little miniature book ornaments that you can buy to support the store. The wonderful owner, Heath, is passionate about Steadfast and providing a place for the community, not just to browse books in, but also to just hang out and relax. Heath has set aside a cosy little reading room (see picture I've added) tucked into the corner of the bookstore for people to hang out and read their finds in. The children's section also has a little corner that kids can read their books in, which means that anybody with little kids/cousins or siblings to watch/etc. could also spend some time together hanging out here instead of bumming around at the mall/park/home. (I think i remember there also being chairs throughout the store you could sit down in but I'm not entirely sure as I was distracted by my mission to track down where the comics were) Steadfast Books is such an awesome place we have here in Christchurch. I seriously recommend it and encourage people to stop by!
Meaning to go for ages, finally. Great little bookshop, actually not so little. All kinds of books and old and new. A little more order in places and signs clearer would be great and maybe a chair to just sit while deciding but those are small things. Otherwise great.
Heath’s new store location has continued to cultivate that experience of the library of Alexandria 2.0. In this modern world, it is a breath of fresh air to see the art of curation and, expression of discussion show life. I always enjoy a trip here, and look forward to the next visit.
A clean, well-organised store with an impressive range to browse through — from history and comics to children’s books, DVDs, and plenty more. There’s a generous amount of parking and great space between shelves, making it easy to take your time exploring. It was a bit chilly inside on a winter’s day, and prices are on the higher side — but that’s often the trade-off for a thoughtfully curated, easy-to-navigate secondhand bookstore.
