Essentially they have the attitude of "If it is old then it must be worth money." They no longer see themselves as a charity shop but rather as a business. Cost of living is not an excuse for unrealistic pricing, they get everything donated. The codger behind the counter near the furniture was pretty rude, why volunteer if it is so much effort. Made me feel like I should not have been buying anything; I was an inconvenience. Worth checking out but don't expect anything cheap as it is similar to an antique shop unfortunately.

***(This was my previous review before the new management took over. Read new thoughts at the bottom. stars changed from 5 to 3) Alright, here it comes. This review has been a long time coming and the excellence of mission op shops have provided the perfect opportunity to do so. This organization is the gold standard. I have lived and moved all over Australia never stopping in a town for more than 7 years and I can say without a doubt, after 40 odd years, that the state of charity shops in Australia is at an all time low. And it would be almost defunct if it wasn't for some of the off brand church/animal welfare spots dotted across the land. Seriously, what happened Vinnie's, Salvos and Lifeline? Where is the charity? High prices and stock that is distributed via warehouses into the foulness of 'Charity Beautique'... Absolutely disgraceful. Every item is pricechecked online and the magic that once was opshops in this country stripped bare. And then there are places like City Mission. Where you can ALWAYS find something that makes life easier on a budget... And not only that occasionally find something genuinely special, because it hasn't been gathered in warehouses and strained through a collander to maximise profit... And it is still run by a small, generous organisation that redistributes wealth into community in which it operates. Whoever the district manager is in Hobart and the surrounding suburbs deserves to be credited with serious respect. Your stores are well organised, priced, lit and have friendly staff who obviously love volunteering because of the atmosphere you have created. If I had one wish it would be that jams and chutneys return to the counters of these places. Other than that; 5 stars. ***I am amending my review to 3 stars after recently having visited and being confronted by the same sad story happening to all the larger brand Op-Shops across the country. Everything is too clean and organized, and management has once again swooped in and marginalized the older staff and workers who have spent years building up a culture and environment they were comfortable in. I am all for a clean slate, and all places need a shake up... but what is happening across the state is the removal of any true personality and patina that Op-shops get... in favor of an overly officious and unwhimsical approach. Not to mention the constant price checking online that generalizes what things are worth and removes local knowledge about what items WILL ACTUALLY sell for. Your best resource at an Op-Shop is your workers and staff that often live hand to mouth. If you don't let them price things by regional knowledge you will end up overstocked and with unhappy customers who don't spread the word locally that your Op-Shop is great. Stop looking at the numbers and start giving the individual stores more agency. Some things need a logistics check and the books need to balance, but the people that work and shop there need to be the highest priority, always. Charity does not always need to be so clear cut. HUGE op shop. Friendly and helpful staff. Full of useful and interesting things - clothes, electrical, cutlery, crockery, DVD's, VHS's, and even a giant wine glass full of buttons! Well worth a look.
